Don’t Want to Oversaturate With Color? Just Add it to the Right Spot

We talk a lot about working with neutral colors on our DesignSourceCT blog; however, sometimes incorporating a pop of color is necessary to add some personality and create a focal point. If your client is interested in trying out some the 2013 color trends but doesn't want to oversaturate with color, here are some ways that adding color to the right spot can make an impact without going overboard:
  • Accent colors do not need to be limited to walls. For those that are weary about trying a new bold color, consider accessorizing with an accent color or even creating a focal point in a room by painting the window frame.
  • Another great place to try out an accent color is the kitchen cabinetry. While your client may not necessarily want to paint all of the cabinets in an accent color, painting the cabinetry on an island can provide a nice compromise.
  • In the living room, upholstered furniture provides a great opportunity to introduce color and can help to tie other elements of the room together.

Not Sold on Leather? A Few Accents Add a Lot of Cool

Leather trunk as coffee table
While leather may not be your client's material of choice, it does offer some nice perks such as it being a sturdy and low-maintenance material. Leather also provides a great opportunity to introduce a new texture and some warmth into a room's interior design scheme. For those that don't want to go overboard with this material, here are some unique ways that you can tastefully accessorize with leather:
  • To dress up an upholstered couch, incorporate some leather throw pillows for a sophisticated accent. This is also a great way to pull together other elements in the room as well.
  • Old-fashioned trunks can function as a unique coffee table piece, and for one that may require some restoration, you can give it a little style by adding leather handles. This subtle touch of leather can work well with a wide variety of decorating styles.
  • For those that desire a more eclectic vibe in a room, a leather pouf can provide the perfect opportunity to blend this more contemporary piece with something more traditional. Plus, poufs can function as footrests or provide additional seating.

Design Your Pantry to Include More Appliances

Source:Nicole Lanteri, On My Agenda LLCvia Houzz
Nothing clutters up a kitchen faster than appliances that take up too much counter space. So where are people tucking away these much needed appliances when they're not using them? The answer: the kitchen pantry. The pantry is the ideal location to store away appliances as it hides them from view, but still makes them easily accessible when needed. Obviously, the size of the pantry will help dictate the number of appliances that can be stored in the space, and Houzz outlines some helpful points to consider when designing the perfect pantry for storage:
  • First, consider the size of the appliances that might be tucked away in the pantry. You can keep these dimensions in mind as you determine the sizes of the pantry shelves.
  • If you have a lot of pantry space to work with it would be wise to consider adding electrical outlets along the countertops or behind the shelf space, so that the heavier appliances could be used inside the pantry space.
  • Don't forget to add task lighting under the cabinets to make it easier for items to be located in the pantry in a hurry.

How to Make Your Living Room Comforting

[caption id="attachment_3164" align="aligncenter" width="550"]iiving room design Source: DesignSourceCt[/caption] Aside from the kitchen, the living room is the heart of the home and the space where much entertaining and living is done. The trick is designing a space that is attractive, but still comfortable and relaxing for the family. Here are some interior design tips to consider for a casual living room:

  • To achieve a more classic look, consider working with calming coastal colors, and spare no expense when it comes to selecting comfortable seating. Upholstered furniture pieces with soft edges are ideal for this space.
  • To create an inviting atmosphere that will encourage family and guests to kick back and relax, throw pillows and blankets should be placed close to hand. Also, striped pillows tend to evoke a more casual setting.
  • For those that prefer a more formal style, you may want to consider incorporating a more casual piece of furniture such as a wooden coffee table with more orderly pieces. You can help tone down the look with some lighthearted pillows.

Start Decorating for Fall With Some Subtle Touches

Many of us look forward to the cooler weather and the colorful foliage that the fall brings. One of the best ways to celebrate this time of the year is to incorporate some seasonal touches into the home. Whether your client will be hosting an upcoming party in his or her home to welcome the new season, or just desires a more cozy atmosphere, here are some fall decorating tips to try out:
  • A fireplace is naturally a focal point in most rooms, and you can further accentuate the fireplace as well as add some texture to the room by stockpiling firewood by the mantel. Of course, this is ideal for wood burning fireplaces, but can also still serve as a nice accent for a gas fireplace as well.
  • Candles are always a nice compliment to any room, especially during the cooler seasons. For maximum impact, go for the big-boy-sized candles.
  • Switch out the lighter throw blankets for faux fur or wool. This will help to create a cozier setting, and are ideal for snuggling up under on a chilly fall evening.
